For the third straight season, Scottie Scheffler heads into the Tour Championship with an inside track to win the FedEx Cup crown. Beginning the week at 10 under and in possession of a two-stroke lead, the world No. 1 looks to accomplish a first after coming away unsuccessful the prior two tries.
With a newly restored East Lake Golf Club and a hungry chasing pack nipping at his heels, the season-long race will not be handed to Scheffler. Xander Schauffele enters the Tour Championship as his nearest pursuer at 8 under with a wealth of experience around this golf course. Whether that translates onto the newest version of East Lake remains to be seen, but the two-time major champion is sure to factor in some shape or form.
St. Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama and BMW Championship winner Keegan Bradley round out those within four of the lead, while Ludvig Åberg seeks to capture the FedEx Cup in his maiden trip to East Lake from five behind. Heavy hitters such as Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark start the tournament on the outskirts of contention a half dozen off the pace.
Meanwhile, former FedEx Cup champions Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel have ground to make up if they are to add a second cup to their mantles. Veterans such as Adam Scott, Tommy Fleetwood and Tony Finau still have life but will require massive efforts to track down the world No. 1.
