“Football is the most popular sport on the planet, and in 2025 a new era for club football will kick off when FIFA stages the greatest, most inclusive and merit-based global club competition right here in the United States,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who made the announcement at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park.
Manchester City are the reigning champions of the competition and will have a chance to defend their title. In total, 30 clubs have already qualified including Concacaf representatives Monterrey, Seattle Sounders, Club Leon, and Pachuca. There is also a slot for another MLS representative but it has not been determined who will take part in the competition through that slot but two teams who make sense are Inter Miami and the Columbus Crew.
Other teams qualified include the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
